Subscription Box Launch Playbook
A subscription asks for an ongoing commitment, so a first-time subscriber hesitates more than a one-off buyer. They want to know what arrives, how often, whether they can skip or cancel, and whether the contents will suit them. This playbook writes the content that answers those hesitations before they turn into abandoned checkouts.
Who this is for
Founders launching a curated subscription box or recurring delivery product.
Before you start
- Your delivery schedule, skip and cancellation terms, stated plainly.
- A description of how items are chosen for each box.
- Photos of real past or sample boxes that you own.
- A sign-up page every article can link to.
Step 1
Plan around hesitations
List what stops someone subscribing.
- Collect the questions prospective subscribers ask about contents, cadence, cost and commitment.
- List the topics your subscribers care about beyond the box itself.
- Decide which questions get a page of their own and which go in an FAQ.
- Plan a recurring article type you can produce for each box.
Step 2
Create the explanation and the archive
Show what subscribers actually get.
- Write a “how it works” page covering curation, delivery, skipping and cancelling.
- Write a page per past box describing what was in it and why each item was chosen.
- Write topic articles for your subscribers’ interests, linking to the boxes that suit them.
- State terms in the same words on every page that mentions them.
Step 3
Publish on the box rhythm
Tie publishing to your delivery schedule.
- Publish the how-it-works page and a sample box before opening subscriptions.
- Add a box page after each delivery has arrived with subscribers.
- Link every article to the sign-up page and the how-it-works page.
- Keep the archive browsable so prospects can see the range over time.
Step 4
Measure subscriptions and retention
Watch both new sign-ups and cancellations.
- Check which pages new subscribers visit before signing up.
- Compare cancellation reasons with the questions your content answers.
- Update the how-it-works page whenever terms change.
- Retire box pages for items that could mislead a new subscriber about current contents.
Common pitfalls
- Hiding cancellation terms, which costs trust and creates complaints.
- Using a hand-picked sample box that does not represent typical contents.
- An archive that stops being updated after the first few boxes.
