Featured and in-article images
An article can arrive with a featured image and up to three images in the body. Here is how to replace, reorder, remove and describe them.
Before you start
An article open in the workspace.
A plan that includes images — compare plans on the pricing page.
Steps
Step 1: Know what arrives with the article
When Automatically generate featured image is on (the default on plans with images), the image is drawn and attached once the article is ready, at no charge.
Longer articles with several distinct sections may also get one to three images inside the body, also at no charge. Shorter articles, or kinds of article carried by their argument rather than by pictures, get none.
Step 2: Generate or replace the featured image
Open Media. Under Featured image, choose Generate a featured image (or Replace the featured image), pick a Style and an Aspect ratio, and optionally describe what you want to see — leave it blank and we build a prompt from the article.
Confirm in Generate a new featured image?. The cost is shown there before you confirm. The new image replaces the current one once it is ready; earlier images stay under Generated images, where you can pick any of them as the featured image again and edit its alt text.
Step 3: Manage images inside the article
Under In-article images, each image has Move up, Move down, Edit alt text and Remove. Replace with… swaps it for another of the article’s images, and Regenerate draws a new one for the same place — free when the original attempt failed, priced like a new image otherwise.
Step 4: Use the suggested visuals (optional)
Suggested visuals lists places where a chart, screenshot or diagram of your own would help a reader, with ready-written alt text you can copy. They are advice only — nothing is generated or added from them.
What you’ll see
The article shows its featured image in Media and its in-article images in the body, each with alt text. Publishing sends the featured image to CMSs that support one.
Troubleshooting
“An image could not be generated”
Choose Try again. A failed paid image is refunded automatically one hour after the failure.
The image is still generating
Images take a little longer than text. You can leave the page — the image will be there when you come back.
“No in-article images”
The article was written without images inside the body, usually because it is short or has few distinct sections. You can still insert one of the article’s generated images from the editor’s insert menu.
The style is not what I expected
Images follow the article’s style, or the project’s default when the article has none. See Choose an image style.
