Edit in the article workspace: saving, versions and history

How the editor saves your work, when a version is created, how to restore an earlier one, and what happens when someone else edits the same article.

Before you start

  • An article — open one from Articles in the sidebar.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Find your way around

The top bar has Write and Preview, Save version, Publish and Export. The side panels are SEO, Outline, Assistant, Links, Media, Publish, History and Settings — choose one to open it, and choose it again to close it.

Press Ctrl / (⌘ / on a Mac) for the command palette. The … menu has Focus mode and Keyboard shortcuts.

  2. Step 2: Edit — your changes are kept automatically

Type directly in the article. While you work, the status next to the title reads Saving…, then Draft saved. That draft is kept for you on the server, so closing the tab does not lose it.

A draft is not a version. Export, publishing and restoring always use the last saved version, and ask first if you have unsaved changes.

  3. Step 3: Save a version

Choose Save version when you reach a point you might want back. Accepted AI edits, rewrites and the original generation also create versions.

  4. Step 4: Restore an earlier version

Open History to see Version history. Choose Restore on a version and confirm. Restoring adds it back as a new version — nothing is overwritten, and you can restore the one you left the same way.

History keeps the current version plus the three most recent earlier ones, each for up to 30 days. Versions that were published to a CMS are kept as the record of what was sent.

  5. Step 5: Edit the SEO fields and excerpt

Open SEO to edit the SEO title, H1 (on-page heading), URL slug, Meta title and Meta description, with a preview of the search result and the quality Checks. The Blog post excerpt has its own Generate button, which costs nothing.

What you’ll see

Your work is never more than a few seconds from being saved, every version you or the AI created is in History, and the version you publish or export is the one you chose to save.

Troubleshooting

“Could not save”

The server could not be reached. Your edits are still in the editor: choose Retry next to the status, and keep the tab open until it reads Draft saved. While you are Offline, edits are kept in the tab.

“Check the highlighted fields”

An SEO field is invalid, for example a slug already used by another article. The body keeps saving; fix the highlighted field to save it too.

“Newer version available” / “Changed elsewhere”

Someone saved this article in another tab or by another person. Choose Keep mine as a new version to save your copy on top, or Use v… to discard your changes and load theirs. Review changes shows the difference first.

“Earlier unsaved changes” when I open an article

You have unsaved changes from an earlier session, made on a version that has since been replaced, so they are not shown. Choose Load those changes to replace what is on screen with them, or Dismiss to keep the current version.

  • Export an article

Download any article as Markdown, HTML or plain text to use in another tool or paste into a CMS that is not connected.

  • Publish an article to your CMS

Send the saved version of an article to a connected site as a draft, immediately, or at a scheduled time — and follow every attempt in the publishing history.

  • Move to Trash and restore

Deleted articles and projects wait in the Trash for 30 days before they are removed for good. Restore them with one click — and know what deleting does not do.
