Niche Blog Launch Playbook

Most new blogs stop within a few months, usually because the subject was too broad to plan or the schedule was too ambitious to keep. This playbook launches a blog with a narrow subject, a map of topic clusters and a publishing rhythm sized to the time you actually have.

Who this is for

Writers, experts and small publishers starting a blog on a specific subject.

Before you start

  • A subject narrow enough to describe in one sentence.
  • A reason you can write about it credibly: experience, research or access.
  • A blog platform you control.
  • A realistic estimate of the time you can give it each week.

Step 1

Plan the clusters

Map the subject before writing the first post.

  1. List the main questions in your subject and group them into clusters.
  2. Choose a pillar topic for each cluster and the supporting articles around it.
  3. Set a publishing schedule you can keep through a busy month.
  4. Start with the cluster you know most about.

Step 2

Create the first cluster

Write the pillar and its supporting posts.

  1. Write the pillar as a full introduction to its part of the subject.
  2. Write supporting articles that each answer one question well.
  3. Add your own experience, examples and opinions so the posts are clearly yours.
  4. Link every supporting article to its pillar.

Step 3

Publish on a steady rhythm

Consistency matters more than volume.

  1. Publish the pillar first and supporting posts on your schedule.
  2. Update the pillar to link each new post as it goes live.
  3. Move to the next cluster only when the first is complete.
  4. Keep a backlog of planned topics so a quiet week does not stop the blog.

Step 4

Measure and refine

Use what search shows you to plan the next cluster.

  1. Check which posts appear in search and for which questions in your search console.
  2. Rewrite posts that appear for questions they do not answer directly.
  3. Add to the map when readers ask questions you had not planned for.
  4. Refresh older posts when facts in them change.

Common pitfalls

  • Choosing a subject so broad that no plan can cover it.
  • A schedule that collapses in the second month.
  • Posts that could have been written by anyone, with no experience or opinion of your own.
