Publication Relaunch Playbook

An established publication often has years of archive: overlapping articles, outdated pieces and a few that still do well. Relaunching is a chance to consolidate that archive around the subjects the publication covers well, rather than only changing the design. This playbook plans that audit and the relaunch.

Who this is for

Editors and publishers relaunching a magazine, blog network or media site with an existing archive.

Before you start

  • Access to the full archive and your search console data.
  • An editor with authority to merge, rewrite or retire articles.
  • A redirect plan for any URL that changes or is removed.
  • A clear statement of what the relaunched publication covers.

Step 1

Plan the audit

Understand the archive before changing it.

  1. List every article with its topic, date and search console data.
  2. Group articles that cover the same subject and mark the strongest in each group.
  3. Mark articles that are outdated, off-subject or factually wrong.
  4. Decide the topics the relaunched publication will focus on.

Step 2

Create the consolidated archive

Merge, update and retire deliberately.

  1. Merge overlapping articles into the strongest version and redirect the others to it.
  2. Update articles that are still useful but out of date, noting the update date.
  3. Retire articles that no longer fit, redirecting where a relevant page exists.
  4. Write new pillar articles for focus topics the archive covers thinly.

Step 3

Publish the relaunch

Release the new structure without losing what worked.

  1. Put redirects in place before any URL changes.
  2. Launch the new navigation around the focus topics.
  3. Link archive articles into the new pillars.
  4. Announce the relaunch to readers with an explanation of what changed.

Step 4

Measure after the relaunch

Watch closely for the first months.

  1. Check your search console for pages that lost visibility after the change.
  2. Fix redirects that point to the wrong page or to nothing.
  3. Track which pillars attract new readers.
  4. Continue consolidating as further overlaps appear.

Common pitfalls

  • Deleting articles without redirects.
  • Merging articles so aggressively that useful detail is lost.
  • Changing the design and leaving the archive untouched.
